Purpose…
Nechako Community Church is: A Community to Learn, to Love, and to Live in Christ
To Learn: As a community seeking to learn, love, and live in Christ, we grow in wisdom and maturity through God’s Word, allowing Scripture to shape our hearts and guide us in doing the Father’s work with humility and truth (Proverbs 1:5–7; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Timothy 4:6–8).
To Love: We strive to love as Christ loved—caring, accepting, patient, and grounded in truth—so that His love is evident in all we do (1 Corinthians 13; John 13:34–35; Colossians 3:14–15; 1John4:19; Romans 5:8-10).
To Live: As new creations in Christ, we live out the Gospel with perseverance and joy, walking as Jesus walked, doing good without growing weary, and letting His Word dwell richly among us as we bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 6:9; Galatians 2:20; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Colossians 3:16–17; 1 John 2:6).
It all started…
The Nechako Community Church began with a gathering of some eight families on Easter weekend in 1983. Most of these families had been associated with other churches who together, evidently, felt the need for a more distinctive Christian ministry to the community. The church started with meetings at Sinkut View School but in the fall of the year moved for services to the Evelyn Dickson Elementary School. During this time the group of some 30 people chose to apply for association with the Mennonite Brethren Conference of BC, because it offered at that time what was considered the best support for the church.
Rev. John Hiebert, and his wife Elaine, came as the first pastor in 1984. Shortly after, by faith, the church acquired the present property on Highway 16 for the construction of a church building which took place over the next few years and was dedicated to God for His service in November, 1989. Rev. Hugo Reimer, and his wife, Connie, began his notably long and very successful ministry in 1990. He and his wife served the church until the fall of 2009. Dan Berger served in children’s and youth ministries for the middle years of Pastor Hugo’s time of service, and Len Harms came as an associate pastor for the last five years of his ministry. Pastor Hugo’s ministry was characterized as a time of very effective connection with the community that resulted in a large youth ministry and, with the assistance of other pastoral leaders, resulted in significant congregational growth toward an average attendance of 200 people. It was a time of expansion to two Sunday worship services and the extension of the facility to include the larger 300-seat, present-day sanctuary.
The last little while…
Over the past 15 years, Nechako Community Church has experienced several seasons of pastoral leadership. Johnny Thiessen, Dennis Fedreau, Jim Nightingale, and Ed Drewlo each brought their own gifts, experiences, and perspectives to NCC, contributing to the growth and life of our church family. Ed Drewlo helped guide NCC through a season of transition as we moved from the ministries of Johnny and Dennis and prepared for Ryan Van Kuik’s ministry.
Ryan led NCC through the unique and challenging season of COVID-19. During a time when gathering together was difficult, Ryan and our church family found creative ways to remain connected and engaged, even when we had to be physically separated.
Today, NCC finds itself in another season of transition as we continue our search for a new pastor. Over the years, our congregation has become smaller, but we have remained a steady and close-knit church family of around 60 people. During this season, we are focusing on strengthening our relationships, caring for one another, and reflecting on who we are as a congregation. We are also taking time to prayerfully discern what we need in our next pastor and where God is leading NCC.
We are grateful for the pastors and leaders who have served NCC over the years and for the many ways God has worked through each season. As we look toward the future, we do so with gratitude for where we have been, appreciation for the church family we have today, and anticipation for what is still to come.
